Site visits are offered in and around Nusa Dua for registered ICFP participants. Please register for only one site visit; participants may not attend more than one site visit due to limited space. 

1. Taman Banjar (Community based Family Planning and Health Center)

Facilities: A spacious Bale Banjar traditional Balinese community hall (50 to 100 person capacity)


Taman Banjar traditional customary village has one of the most comprehensive community-based family planning, baby (under-5), and elderly healthcare services in Bali. Despite its urban location, Taman Banjar still strongly follows Hindu religion, tradition, and culture; all activities regarding its residents must get approval from the village’s influential religious and community leaders. Taman Banjar offers the best example of how to integrate the National Family Planning and Family Welfare Program into its close-knit community and local customary traditions.   • Healthcare services for infants and under-5 children, through weekly Posyandu (integrated health services for children) activities

2. Mengwi Village in Badung Regency

Located within the historical Taman Ayun Hindu water temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mengwi offers attractive traditional approaches to national health and development programs including family planning. It is likely that Badung Regent A.A Agung Gde Agung is willing to expose the regency’s unique family planning programs, which are disseminated through various traditional performing arts such as Bondres, traditional mask theater/comedy, and leather puppet performance.

3. Banjar Panglipuran desa Kubu, Kecamatan Bangli

  1. Posdaya is an innovation to improve the quality and well-being of the community.
  2. Posdaya becomes a paradigm of empowering and mobilizing family and community participation in development.
  3. Posdaya embarks on major areas that trigger an improvement of HDI—i.e. education, health and family planning, environment, and entrepreneurship —o improve family and community welfare at the grassroots level.
  4. Posdaya brings the spirit of mutual assistance (gotong royong) and, moreover, becomes a social gathering forum for family members of all ages (children to the elderly) and all elements in the community.
  5. Posdaya is expected to break up the poverty chain in the community.

As mentioned above, Posdaya targets all family members of all ages, i.e. from childhood until elderly, but specifically young families, children, and women.

For young families, Posdaya leads gradual and self-reliant empowerment process, arranges support from the local government to commit and facilitate and from the universities to provide knowledge, human resource, and fostering.

For children, Posdaya facilitates the early-childhood education programs, the success of which is shown by the understanding and participation of the people, particularly the families with preschool children.  The result of empowerment is indicated by the number of families participating in each activity.  The mothers are encouraged to be involved in productive economic activities.

For youngsters, young families, and women, Posdaya manages various vocational training for students and drop-outs, village-based boy scouts, and avocations on building the culture to work hard and smart through activities within the units of Posdaya from an early age.

Various activities that may be observed in Posdaya include economic activities of young families; education; healthy life; nutrition; environmental activities such as recycling, reducing, and reusing waste; training on entrepreneurship; economic activities done by a group of young mothers and girls; early childhood education (PAUD); nutritious gardening (kebun bergizi); etc. Other existing programs may also be present in Posdaya such as Family Planning and Integrated Service Post (POSYANDU).

4. SMP Dwijendra (Dwijendra Junior High School)

Distance: A half-hour to the site and a half-hour return; a one-hour round trip from Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center or 15 minutes from the BKKBN offices
Facilities: Adequate parking in the lot (sometimes it is crowded in the morning and in the afternoon, before and after school)


Dwijendra Junior High School has implemented Program Generasi Berencana (Youth Planned Generation Program), which enables students to acquire comprehensive knowledge about adolescent reproductive health (ARH), demographic issues, sports, arts, and technology as well as other information required to become a healthy, smart, and responsible young person. The school received several national awards for its innovative youth programs such as healthy youth, community radio programs, youth-based competition, etc.

If selected as the point of destinations in the next site visit: The school’s management and students will prepare a one-hour presentation to share their programs in its spacious auditorium. Visitors will be invited to learn about the school’s community radio program, which airs various interesting activities and effectively spreads messages to its young audience on such topics as youth problems, school activities, reproductive health including healthy dating, teen pregnancy, and drugs.

5. Government-run Denpasar Selatan (South Denpasar) Pusat Kesehatan Masyarakat (Puskesmas/Community Health Center) – part of Denpasar Mayoralty’s Health Office

Distance: An hour trip to the site and an hour return; a two-hour round trip from Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center

Programs and facilities:

  • In-room patient facilities
  • Basic health care facilities for residents of Pedungan village
  • Pre- and post-natal health care and counseling for pregnant women
  • Family planning services and counseling
  • Pre-natal physical and mental exercises for mothers-to-be
  • Integrated baby delivery healthcare and post-natal family planning services
  • Integrated family planning services with cervical and breast cancer early detection services
  • Youth counseling and reproductive health education
  • Male family planning services—vasectomy/sterilization
  • P4K—Baby Delivery Planning and Complication Prevention Program, a breakthrough program implemented as part of Kelurahan Siaga (District Alert Program) to reduce child and maternal mortality rates. Through the program, all pregnant women in the village will be registered with puskesmas. The registration contains: Names of pregnant women, stickers stitched on their homes, and due date of baby. Such information allows women, families, and communities as well as health officers to help them out during the due time and to accompany them to the puskesmas on their D-Day.

The programs and services provided by this puskesmas (community health center) have successfully reduced child and maternal mortality rates, improved girls’ and women’s health, reduced teen and unwanted pregnancies and abortions, and enabled active participation of youth and men in family planning programs. For its quality services, this puskesmas has received several provincial and national awards.

6. Bidan Delima: Private midwife providing family planning service

Bidan Delima, an accreditation program run by Ikatan Bidan Indonesia or IBI (Indonesian Midwives Association), certifies midwives to provide family planning and reproductive health in accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) Standard.

As a private midwife, Wayan Suri charges her patients affordable fees as she has to procure medical equipments, medicines, and contraception kits on her own account. Supported by her team of local midwives, Wayan Suri also provides delivery services.

The sites in Denpasar and Sanur are close to each other.
